Abstract
The aim of the current work is the presentation of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trends from the waste sector in Greece for the period 1990–2012. The presentation for Greece will be carried out in conjunction with the analysis of the related trends for the European Union of 15 members (EU-15) and EU-28 given the fact that Greece constitutes one of the 28 members of European Union, as well as one of 15 members constituting the European Union before its enlargement in 2004.
In general, waste sector is the fourth largest sector in Greece, contributing 4.3 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in 2012 (excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry, LULUCF), while GHG emissions from waste decreased by 19.6 % in 2012 compared to 1990 levels, based on the latest official GHG inventory for the country. Similarly, the waste sector is the fourth largest sector in the EU-28 with approximately 3.1 % contribution on the total GHG emissions for 2012, while the total decrease over the period 1990–2012 is about 31.5 %.
In a next step, the projection of the evolution of the emissions for the period 2012–2030 including the impact of the implemented, adopted and planned policies and measures for the mitigation of the emissions will be provided. These policies are fully harmonized with the EU policy for the mitigation of GHG emissions from waste and is mainly described by the regulation for the Municipal Waste disposal on land (Landfill Dir. 1999/31/EC), the sewage sludge use in agricultures (Dir. 86/278/EEC), the Paper/Cardboard recycling (Dir. on Packaging and Packaging Waste, 94/62/EC) and the Bio-wastes in the Waste Framework Dir. (art. 22, 2008/98/EC).
