Abstract

Primary tracheal tumors are the least common tumors of the airways. In adult population, they are mostly malignant, the squamous cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma accounting for nearly 2/3rd of all tracheal tumors. Tracheal tumors usually present with non-specific symptoms. Consequently, the tumors pose a significant diagnostic challenge and conclusive diagnosis is frequently delayed. The definitive diagnosis should involve a combination of computed tomography (CT) scan and bronchoscopy. Surgical resection is the only curative treatment for the most malignant tumors, and without resection, the outcome is poor, even after primary radiotherapy. The bronchoscopic therapeutic approaches such as tracheal stent placement, debridement, and Nd-YAP laser therapy are generally employed for those presenting at an unresectable stage. The histological types of the tumor, completeness of resection, and clearance of the margin have prognostic values. An aggressive approach to early diagnosis, modern tracheal surgical techniques like laryngotracheal, tracheal or carinal reconstructions along with postoperative radiotherapy however, have improved the survival of patients with malignant tracheal tumors.
