Patient Management: A Nursing Perspective

Organization and Management of IVF Units

Abstract

The roles of the fertility nurse in an IVF unit are many and varied. Nurses are integral to the efficient and effective running of a fertility clinic as they are often the one person who has contact with all others involved in an individual’s/couple’s journey. The following chapter on patient management is written from a nursing perspective and considers the fertility nurse’s role in the following:

  • Evolution of the fertility nurse’s role

  • Managing patient expectations

  • Communication

  • Medico-legal issues/minimising risk

  • Medication management

  • Psychological sequelae of assisted reproductive technology treatments

Whilst it is recognised that many of the above will primarily relate to the clinician and the clinic itself, nurses also have a responsibility to be aware of their role in such areas. Regulations, laws and guidelines governing assisted reproduction can and often are different from one state or country to another and, as such, it is a nurse’s responsibility to ensure that they are also familiar with these as well as the clinic policies and procedures that govern their code and scope of practice.
