Abstract

This chapter reviews the ten classes of topological insulators and superconductors and presents their classifying table. The two complex classes of the table, which are the focus of our work, are then discussed in depth. The emphasis is on the physical properties, experimental achievements and the conjectures put forward by the physics community. The bulk-boundary correspondence principle is exemplified using exactly solvable models in arbitrary dimensions. The chapter also introduces the generic classes of physical models which incorporate the effect of an external magnetic field and disorder. It elaborates the main assumptions and summarizes the behavior of various physical quantities of interest. The reader will find here several technical results from functional analysis used in our work.
