Abstract
“Heterotopic ossification” is also referred to as “heterotopic bone”, “ectopic ossification”, “myositis ossificans circumscripta” or “fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva”. According to the WHO definition, it is a “non-neoplastic change” following surgery, trauma, burns or neurologic injury. The bone lesion is located on the outer surface of the bone or in soft tissues (muscles) but always at a distance to the periosteum. The abnormal tissue is characterised by a connective tissue proliferation and formation of new bone (“osseous metaplasia”). Three zones are typical:
