Controversies in Caring for Women with Epilepsy

Abstract

A 55-year-old woman has been on carbamazepine for 30 years with excellent control of her partial-onset seizures. In the past when an attempt was made to switch her to lamotrigine or levetiracetam, she experienced seizure recurrence as soon as carbamazepine was tapered off. You order vitamin D levels which are borderline low and a DXA scan which shows osteoporosis of hip and thoracic spine. What is your advice to her for future management of her epilepsy in this context?
