Afterword: The Economic Crisis and Mental Health

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Social and Community Psychiatry

Abstract

In this chapter, we provide a brief description of the European and Greek political and social context of the economic crisis, in order to gain a better understanding of the effects of these circumstances on public health and particularly on mental health. Then, we refer to the impact of the economic crisis on mental and general public health. Finally, we present certain proposals and innovative initiatives in the mental health field. Unlike the recurrent distorted ideas and paralysing inward-looking approach so common in modern Greek psychiatric institutions, we choοse to present specific examples of interventions which are in keeping with the spirit of critical rationality and reflection which pervades this book.
