Surgery of Stapes Fixations

Abstract

Congenital ossicular abnormalities are rare causes of hearing loss. Fixation of the stapes footplate is the most common of these malformations, and it is important to clinically differentiate this entity from other causes of conductive hearing loss in children and adults. Given the rarity of these malformations and concerns some surgeons have regarding stapes surgery in children, the data regarding postoperative outcomes are limited. However, a growing body of literature suggests that surgery for congenital footplate fixation is safe in well-selected patients, but that hearing outcome expectations should be slightly lower than those seen after surgery for otosclerosis. Herein the relevant pathophysiology, clinical features, treatment options, and postoperative results for congenital stapes footplate fixation are reviewed.
