The Business of Geriatrics

Abstract

In this chapter, the author describes an 8-year “relationship” with the Office of Inspector General (OIG). What began as an investigation of medical director relationships morphs into a full-blown audit of billing practices. There is a discussion of the key elements of a medical director contract and the importance of fair market value in this relationship. Understanding how to work with ones attorney is also described, and when legal counsel is no longer necessary is reviewed in the light of a real-world experience. Most medical practices fear a full-blown audit; this chapter describes one practice experience, as well as the successful outcome.
