Abstract
In this chapter, the author shares his experience in regard to finding effective and appropriate incentives for physicians. He recounts his experience developing a primary care private practice’s approach to the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) and the necessary business decisions that go into implementing such a program. He discussed the interaction between pay for performance programs and their impact on practice productivity. He also discussed the concept of integrating pay for performance criteria and quality measures into the workflow of a practice. There is a brief discussion of the upcoming Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and how a practice might approach this program. Finally, there is a discussion on the use of scribes in a medical practice to improve documentation and preserve clinician productivity.
