Abstract
Most of the surveys discussed in this book have the goal of discovering new objects in the sky. The surveys in this chapter, however, focus on astrometry—the accurate measurement of star positions. But while astrometry in the telescope era (Chapter 3) was driven by the need to improve navigation, its focus now is the accurate determination of parallaxes and proper motions of already-known stars.
