Abstract

The purpose of the Washington Group on Disability Statistics (WG) is to develop standard forms of population-based disability measures, comparable across cultures and countries, for individual country use and for use in international comparisons. This chapter reviews how the WG was started, including the original U.N. meeting which resulted in the creation of the WG, the content of the group’s first meeting, and the early decisions made by the group that have guided the WG work since its inception in 2001.
