Abstract

The seeds of the Space Task Group (STG) were planted as early as 1952, when NACA engineers started to focus on flights in the upper atmosphere at altitudes up to 50 miles and at speeds in the range Mach 4 to Mach 10. Almost as an afterthought, it was resolved to devote a modest effort to flights above 50 miles and speeds up to escape velocity.
