Abstract
Penetrating neck trauma is a significant source of morbidity and mortality and has been reported in between 5 and 10 % of all trauma cases presenting to the emergency department. As such, it is critical for the radiologist to be familiar with the sequelae of penetrating neck injuries, the gravest of which are catastrophic arterial and spinal cord injuries. The use of multidetector CT has grown rapidly over the past decade and has allowed clinicians to reserve diagnostic angiography surgical and exploration only for the most serious cases. Percutaneous embolizations of actively bleeding patients have also decreased the numbers of patients undergoing surgery.
