Abstract

As far as NASA was concerned, Project Mercury concluded with the successful (albeit somewhat trouble-plagued) 22-orbit flight of Gordon Cooper aboard spacecraft on 15/16 May 1963. There were no more single-pilot flights manifested, although for a time Alan Shepard led a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful campaign to add one final Mercury flight, which he obviously wanted to fly. He would later fall victim to an ear ailment which forced him to stand down from the flight rotation for several frustrating years.
