Abstract

As dawn broke on Wednesday, 3 October 1962, sports and space fans across the United States were faced with something of a quandary. Crowded around television and radio sets across the nation, people had tuned in to the expected early-morning launch of Wally Schirra aboard his Sigma 7 spacecraft for the MA-8 mission. But that date also marked the opening World Series baseball game between the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants, so later in the day people would tune in their television sets to the baseball. During innings breaks, however, many would switch over to two of the three major TV networks in order to follow the real-life drama involving the orbital flight of America’s fifth man into space.
