Distal Radius Fractures

Abstract

Fractures of the radial styloid can present as isolated fractures, or as part of a more complex intra-articular distal radius fracture, in combination with scaphoid fractures, radiocarpal dislocations, or other carpal injuries. When evaluating radial styloid fractures, it is essential to rule out concomitant injuries as the sequelae of missing the associated injuries and failing to treat them may result in degenerative arthritis of the wrist and disability. One must take into account the complex anatomy surrounding the radial styloid when choosing a surgical approach to treat the fracture and the associated injuries. Various methods of fixation of radial styloid fractures have been employed, with overall acceptable results. Treatment of associated intercarpal ligamentous injuries, however, has a more guarded prognosis.
