Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis is an integral component for treatment of both acute kidney injury and advanced chronic kidney disease in children and adolescents. The choice of the mode of dialysis, either peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis, should be made as a part of the integrated care model including a combined dialysis-transplantation program. Once the decision has been made to pursue PD, the catheter placement procedure must be specifically planned and should include omentectomy. The decision between open and laparoscopic approach for PD catheter placement is dependent on many factors including the experience and comfort of the surgeon performing the procedure. Laparoscopy is also a valuable diagnostic tool for troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning catheters.
