Abstract

Neck masses in the pediatric population are common and can often cause significant parental concern. Evaluation and management of these patients can be challenging, given the extensive and varied differential diagnosis of neck masses that occur in children. The vast majority of such masses are benign. However, clinicians should remain attentive to the possibility of a malignant process, as an estimated 5–10 % of biopsied pediatric neck masses are malignant. Thus, a comprehensive, organized approach to diagnosis and appropriate management is mandatory in each case.
