Abstract
Poor sleep and sleep-related problems are common among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, affect daytime performance, and have health implications. This chapter reviews behavioral assessment and intervention for sleep concerns, including delayed sleep onset, disruptive bedtime routines, night awakenings, diurnal sleeping, and sleep terror. Different measurement methods are explained such as direct observation, sleep-specific assessment protocols, and actigraphy. The chapter emphasizes programs to improve sleep hygiene as well as targeted interventions that incorporate stimulus control, prompting, extinction, and positive reinforcement procedures. Several research-to-practice recommendations are presented.
