Abstract

The intestinal microbiome plays a critical role in the synthesis of vitamins and micronutrients, maintenance of the gastrointestinal mucosal barrier, and development of host immune response. Increasing evidence points to the association between microbial alterations and disease pathogenesis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As studies demonstrate the effect of diet on microbial composition in health and disease, a greater understanding of dietary components that modulate the IBD microbiome can help clarify mechanisms that improve disease course. This review will provide an overview of the intestinal microbiome in IBD and the impact of various components in our diet on the IBD microbiome.
