Clinical Management of the Rheumatoid Hand, Wrist, and Elbow

Abstract

Although there is a decreasing trend in the application of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) for rheumatoid patients, it remains a powerful tool to treat advanced stages of joint destruction or instability. However, the potential risks are high. Careful planning and advanced surgical techniques help to avoid the main complications of infection and extensor mechanism insufficiencies. Aseptic loosening of the implant is still the limiting factor for implant survival. Surgeons performing TEA must be prepared to face an increasing number of demanding revisions in the future.
