Abstract
Careful consideration and planning are required to determine the best surgical treatment for patients with hand deformities caused by rheumatoid arthritis. Pain relief and stability of critical joints in the hand and wrist should be the surgeon’s foremost concern. If indicated, procedures such as thumb MCP fusion and wrist fusion are excellent options to achieve these results. However, the patient’s goals and values must be considered before choosing an appropriate treatment. This chapter will present illustrative cases to highlight the indications for hand surgery in RA patients and techniques recommended to achieve the best outcome for the patient.
