Abstract

Clinical risk and patient harm can mean different things to different people. Without formalising the boundaries of what constitutes clinical risk management, a safety analysis is at risk of scope-creep or of hazards falling through the cracks. For example, are issues of information governance and security best managed under the banner of safety or using other techniques? Those developing the safety management system need to plan ahead and decide which combination of tools will be harnessed to optimally assure the solution. This chapter highlights those subject areas which are on the border of clinical risk management and which require a strategic decision on their inclusion or exclusion from the safety analysis.
