Abstract
While the chromosome number was still being debated, the structure and function of DNA is spectacularly revealed. Finding the structure of DNA was, of course, going to be a spectacular achievement, but in many ways, it was a more straightforward process of discovery than finding the chromosome number. The chemical formula was already well known, but the structure was not until Watson and Crick revealed it. Strangely, pivotal though this information was, the structure of DNA did little to progress our knowledge of chromosomes.
