Abstract
In this chapter we present some of the necessary background material needed for the study of the heat kernel method, such as integral transforms, asymptotic expansions, Hamiltonian systems and the theory of operators in Hilbert spaces. We also introduce some notation used throughout the book. It can be safely skipped by a reader familiar with these subjects.
