This chapter introduces the concepts of life cycle thinking and LCA. It discusses history of LCA development and explains its assessment framework. The evidence of LCA application for impact appraisal of tourism products and services is identified and reviewed. The chapter concludes with a critical evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of LCA use as compared against the alternative methods for environmental impact appraisal of tourism products and services. Discussion is held on how the shortcomings of the LCA method could potentially be addressed to enhance its applicability in tourism.
