Abstract

A 24-year-old Caucasian woman with cystic fibrosis (CF) was referred to the endocrinology clinic for evaluation of vitamin D deficiency. Six years prior to this visit, she had been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency and osteopenia from a different hospital. She received 50,000 IU of ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) daily, which did not improve her vitamin D status. She was currently taking 50,000 IU ergocalciferol three times a day. Her total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level was 24 ng/mL. Her bone mineral density (BMD) was lower than the young adult range; with T-scores at the hip and spine of less than −2.0. She denies any history of vitamin D deficiency-related symptoms such as bone pain, muscle ache, or past history of fracture.
