Abstract
Narrative interaction is driven by agency, dialogism, and collaboration that together with the material presence of content, form, and medium constitute the narrative experience. The first section of this book provides examples of different levels of collaboration that interactive narrative has offered people over the centuries. It shows that digital interactive narrative followed interactive print in providing readers opportunities for manipulating characters and events and determining direction through a story. The narrative experience has been shaped by the mechanics (analog or digital) that delineate the interaction between people and narrative content, whether as author or as reader or both.
