Abstract
Describing the life of an educator whose background was conservative and privileged, I trace the influences of Joe L. Kincheloe on me as an educator who was different. The importance of Kincheloe’s works is highlighted against an autobiographical sketch of coming to know myself, the classroom, and many challenges faced by educators and students alike as the right to be who we are is constantly challenged by authoritarian powers driving social and educational policies.
