Abstract

A commonly used definition for reliability is the ability of a system to perform a required function under known conditions for a desired period of time or a determined amount of usage. Closely related to reliability, and actually what the systems engineer is interested in, is availability. Again, the definition is as follows: the probability that a system subject to repair will perform a required function under known conditions on demand. Notice that availability has introduced two additional concepts: (1) the probability of something happening and (2) repair.
