Abstract

The chapter presents the results of the assessment of three scenarios developed in the framework of the case study of the Gare-Lac neighbourhood in Yverdon-les-Bains (Switzerland). The behavioural scenario clearly works out to be the most energy-efficient, whereas the technological scenario emerges as the most energy intensive for the three indicators considered (total primary energy, non-renewable primary energy and global warming potential). The symbiotic scenario falls more or less halfway between these two scenarios. In addition, it appears that none of the three scenarios manages to fully meet the intermediary objectives for 2035 defined by the vision of a 2000-Watt society. In reaction, a hybrid scenario is then developed to pragmatically combine technological innovations, residents’ behavioural changes and the enhancement of potential resources by short circuits. This latter scenario proves that it is possible to reach most intermediary goals for 2035 while keeping to a holistic, sustainable and balanced approach which is not strictly conceived in terms of energy sobriety.
