Abstract
This chapter examines the investment opportunities that follow from the different theaters of sustainable value creation discussed in previous chapters. It argues that to seize them, financial innovation makes sense if it (1) works at the micro-level, and if it (2) can transform industries and countries, rather than being merely a “nice” niche activity. This chapter argues that to move truly center stage in terms of relevance, impact investing must provide investment solutions for advanced and emerging economies that address four megatrends that are reshaping how companies, governments and civil society are creating value and finance public goods. (1) Products and services responding to massive pent-up demand at the Base of the Pyramid; (2) investments in total resource productivity and a circular economy; (3) new structures, products and services to drive the affordability of the welfare state; and (4) products and services meeting the needs of LOHAS consumers all offer exciting investment opportunities.
