Abstract

Minimal residual disease (MRD) evaluation has a substantial impact in several hematological neoplasms, particularly in those in which effective treatments ensure the achievement of profound reductions of tumor burden. Given the impressive progress of multiple myeloma (MM) treatment, there is little surprise in observing an increased interest in the use of MRD evaluation tools for a better monitoring of treatment efficacy, currently in the context of clinical trials but, potentially, also in clinical practice. The aim of the present chapter is to provide an updated overview of MRD approaches in MM, including flow cytometry and molecular and imaging techniques. Apart from technical and methodological considerations, special attention has been devoted to a clinical-wise interpretation of currently available MRD results and to applications that might become available in the near future.
