Pharmacology of Ocular Therapeutics

Abstract

Biochemical pathways involved in maintaining the functions of various ocular structures are very unique in nature. Therefore, understanding ocular biochemistry is of immense importance while exploring the changes during pathological conditions. These changes play a significant role on the scope of converting the biochemical manifestations into therapeutic opportunities. Current knowledge regarding the ocular biochemistry of these structures is ever expanding to be limited within a single chapter. Prudent efforts of this chapter is to review the molecular construct of the tissues of the eye and their characteristic metabolism, discussed under the subtitles as: cornea; lens, iris, ciliary body and aqueous humor; sclera; uvea; vitreous, retina and the retinal pigment epithelium.
