This volume serves as an introduction to peer reviewing with the explicit goal of educating young or starting researchers in the subject. Peer reviewing is an important part of science and scientific activities as it functions as an internal quality control process. Despite this important role, hardly any structured training to peer reviewing is available, a lack this booklet aims to address.

Not only are the broad context, notion, and function of peer reviewing explained, but also the most general principles to adhere to have been presented as well as a lot of practical tips and tricks illustrated by concrete examples with explanations. Although more can be said about peer reviewing, in particular about its basic principles, and many more examples with accompanying explanations can be provided, a candidate reviewer should be well prepared for the job after having read this booklet.

In that sense, the material in this volume is well suited to be used in the context of innovative doctoral schools or other forms of training for Ph.D. students. And it is our hope that you, our reader, after having become an accomplished researcher and reviewer, pass on this message to your junior or starting colleagues by appropriately preparing them to become seasoned reviewers as well.
