Abstract

South of the Himalaya mountain arc, the Peninsular India is a shield comprising composite, consolidated and rigid crustal blocks of Archaean antiquity. These crustal blocks, which remained undeformed by compressional tectonism for very long geological periods, however, witnessed different degrees of extensional tectonism manifest in sagging down of the crust or its breaking into horsts and grabens.
