Abstract

Permanent education in the context of ageing in Brazil is basically in formal learning settings which characterized by education and certification, and non-formal learning where education classes do not follow a sequential and hierarchical system of progression and duration. Currently, Brazil includes over 200 Universities of the Third Age, mostly present in higher education institutions, and including university extension projects. Universities of the Third Age are configured as a permanent mode of education of a non-formal nature since the goal is not to provide the participants with certification but to engage in learning as an end in itself. The learning environment at Universities of the Third Age provides the exchange of experiences, sociability, and even the recovery of active citizenship. IN later life, educational practice should address more effectively the unique needs, interests and demands that one generally finds at the latter stages of the life cycle process. This chapter addresses the context of education for older people in Brazil, highlighting its trajectory, development, current possibilities, and future prospects.
