Abstract
High-temperature oxidation (HTO) of metals and alloys is a scale-forming oxidation process in gaseous environments. HTO is influenced by metal temperature, gas composition, exposure time, and pressure, and it may be characterized by weight gain, thickness reduction (penetration), and rate of oxide thickness growth, which is a measure of the rate of oxidationin oxidizing (O 2), sulfidizing (H 2 S), carburizing (CH 4 or CO), and nitriding (N 2) conditions. HTO is also referred to as high-temperature oxidation, tarnishing, and scaling, and the rate of attack is significantly increased with increasing temperature.
