Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science

Abstract

Electrochemistry is a science that studies chemical reactions that involve electron (e ) transfer at the interface between an electrical conductor (electrode) and an ionic conductor (electrolyte). An electrode is either a metal or semiconductor, and an electrolyte is a solution that conducts electricity due to ionic motion. Nowadays, electrochemistry can be treated as a science of interfaces. If an electrochemical reaction occurs on a metal surface, then this leads to metal deterioration or degradation, and the electrochemical process is called corrosion, which is represented by an oxidation reaction, \(M \rightarrow M^{z+} + ze^{-}\). This oxidation reaction implies that M losses ze electrons to the immediate interface. As a result, M becomes a metallic ion (M z+) known as a cation having a positive electrical charge.
