Hydrodissection

Abstract

Hydrodissection helps the surgeon in manual small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification surgery. The technique effectively cleaves the surrounding cortex from the capsule and uses preinjection tenting of the anterior capsule. The purpose of continued injection of fluid is to increase the hydrostatic pressure within the bag to pop out the nucleus and is an essential part of manual small incision cataract surgery (MICS). Insufficient hydrodissection is the most common complication which makes subsequent manipulation of the nucleus difficult and provokes excess strain on the capsule and the zonules.
