Mechanism of the Protective Effects of Wine Intake on Cardiovascular Disease

Wine Safety, Consumer Preference, and Human Health

Abstract

Results from several randomized human intervention trials suggest that moderate wine consumption has protective effects on cardiovascular system. While there is not enough evidence from epidemiological data to differentiate between the action of ethanol and the nonalcoholic components of wine, human intervention clinical trials demonstrate an additional protective effect of wine versus spirits on intermediate cardiovascular risk factors. Thus, besides ethanol, polyphenols seem to be the compounds responsible for this extra beneficial effect attributed to moderate wine consumption. Among possible mechanisms, wine polyphenols appear to prevent oxidative stress, exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, decrease blood pressure, positively modify the plasma lipid profile, and reduce diabetes risk.
