Abstract

As surgeons expand their laparoscopic skills, endoscopic techniques have become indispensable tools in minimally invasive colorectal surgery. All general and colorectal surgeons must receive training in a certain minimum number of endoscopies, both diagnostic and therapeutic. Although for many this involves only screening colonoscopy for detecting colorectal neoplasms in average risk patients, there are many other potential intraoperative uses as well. In this chapter we will cover the current uses and indications of endoscopy in preventing and managing complications, as well as in diagnosing and treating a variety of colorectal diseases. Some of the techniques covered include hybrid laparoscopy-endoscopy, polypectomy, EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection), ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection), and endoscopic management of postoperative complications, such as enterocutaneous fistulae, and anastomotic stricture, bleeding, and leak.
