Abstract

In 1933 Karl Jansky became the first to detect extraterrestrial radio emission. Thirty years later SETI had become a new concept and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence had started in earnest. Frank Drake’s OZMA project was a pioneer effort to be followed by many others. The challenge to find artificial signals from space is enormous, both in terms of optimal search strategies and in terms of high-tech hardware. After more than fifty years of observations no conclusive evidence has been found. Nevertheless, many dedicated scientists believe that we so far have only scratched the surface of this ultimate challenge.
