Career Paths in Telemental Health

Abstract

The telemental health model of service delivery described in this chapter is a replicable, evidence-based, innovative program designed to increase access to licensed mental health professionals in an integrated healthcare system in rural communities. The chapter is written from the perspective of the owners of an established telemental health company, and from that of the licensed therapists providing services as independent contractors to this company. Included is a vignette describing how a licensed mental health practitioner can work from home and provide quality telemental health services that are integrated into the treatment of a rural community primary healthcare setting. Highlighted are the authors’ perspectives on the benefits and drawbacks of delivering telemental health services within this model.
