Abstract

Sleep has physical and mental restorative properties that are essential for survival and health. However, physiological changes during sleep can predispose to sleep-disordered breathing such as central apneas, snoring, respiratory effort-related arousals, and obstructive apneas in the obese or those with an anatomically or functionally compromised upper airway. Sleep-disordered breathing, especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is strongly associated with metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and greater mortality. Yet, OSA is still unknown to many, and there is growing evidence to suggest significant health disparities with respect to the distribution, diagnosis, and management of OSA. This chapter will review the available literature on disparities in obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in the U.S. and highlight important gaps in knowledge that may be the focus of future research.
