The astronomy of India in the premodern era was a complex mix of traditional Indian (Vedic) astronomical thought, the astronomy of the Islamic world, and Hellenistic astronomy.  In this chapter, I offer an account of its development, and explain how the construction of the observatories of the early 18th century Rajput ruler Jai Singh II were meant to aid in a return to Indian astronomy in a period when the thought of the West encroached on India.  Finally, I discuss the ritual and artistic functions of astronomy.
