Abstract
Maintenance has been defined as the combination of all technical and administrative actions, including supervision actions, intended to retain an item in, or restore it to, a state in which it can perform its required function. It is a set of organised activities that are carried out in order to keep an item in its best operational condition with optimal utilisation of resources. In a survey conducted by the author regarding use of resources in two different naval commands, it was estimated that over 50–60 % of total operation cost went into maintenance of the ships and its machinery. Though the operation cost could be directly linked with the achieved operational objectives it was extremely difficult to justify the maintenance cost with its accrued benefits.
