Book cover Neurodegenerative Disorders

Abstract

This chapter outlines common infective causes of cognitive impairment and dementia; HIV, syphilis, toxoplasma, cryptococcosis, Whipple’s disease and hepatitis C. Their clinical presentations, neuropsychological profiles, imaging findings and CSF findings are discussed.

Many of these organisms cause cognitive impairment or dementia through inflammatory and degenerative pathways common to many neurodegenerative disorders.
