Extrahepatic Portal Vein Obstruction (EHPVO) and Idiopathic Portal Hypertension: East Versus West

  • Conference paper
Portal Hypertension VI

Abstract

Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction and idiopathic portal hypertension are entities that encompass the spectrum of vascular diseases of the liver. Various aetiologies, definitions and presentations have been described from the West that are different from the East. Patient characteristics and natural history also vary between patient populations. A unified approach to defining patient characteristics, natural history, prognosis and management in these disease conditions is an unmet need and a challenge. A succinct knowledge regarding differences between the prevailing concepts in different parts of the world is therefore necessary so as to have a more unified document. The present status paper is a review of the available data and also incorporates the consensus developed at the Baveno VI meeting recently for extrahepatic portal vein obstruction and idiopathic portal hypertension among patients in the West and East.
